Our Sundried Tomatoes

Beyond the vast range of vegetables and seafood preserves that we’ve presented in the other sections of this site, Campo d’Oro also produces Sundried Tomatoes in different recipes and packages.

This is one of our most popular products both in Italy and abroad and deserves a special mention.

The 'Tomato' is one of the basic ingredients of Mediterranean Cuisine, and it is the main protagonist of many different recipes.

Its origins are commonly traced back to America, but its European popularity was down to the Spanish, around the sixteenth century. However it took almost two centuries before the tomato, then considered only an ornamental and very poisonous plant, could take a place of any ranking amongst the traditional ingredients of today’s culinary world.

For many years the Mediterranean tradition has embraced seasonal delicacies wisely preserving them so that they can be enjoyed all year round.

Out of all the preservation methods that there are, one of the oldest is that of ‘Sun Drying’ During July, August and September, our tomatoes are sliced in half and scattered with sea salt and prepared on aligned looms in the country fields near our plant.

The sun drying process takes almost one week. The slow sun drying in the Sicilian summer, gives Campo d’Oro’s tomatoes a strong color and an intense taste, suitable for endless amounts of recipes.

In addition to the special taste and texture, our sun dried tomatoes are a special product thanks to artisan recipes handed down from generation to generation, that we have managed to preserve despite increased requirement for production on an industrial scale.

Campo d’Oro also produces the most delicious Dried and Semi Dried Cherry Tomatoes in Oil.

The Cherry Tomatoes, typical from Pachino, in the South East of Sicily, are sun dried over the space of two days and preserved in extra virgin olive oil, basil and garlic. When ready, the tomatoes result sweet and succulent: wonderful to be tasted alone or with pasta, soups and pizza.
